Even though the University of Maine football team lost two of its last three games, the Black Bears (8-3) still earned a bye in the first-round of the 20-team NCAA playoffs for FCS teams (the old Division I-AA).
Maine will play in the second round at Appalachian State University (8-3) in Boone, N.C., on Dec. 3. It will be a pairing of second-place teams, Maine from the Colonial Athletic Association, ASU from the Southern Conference.
The two teams have met once before, with Maine beating the Mountaineers 14-13 in an NCAA first-round game in 2002.
