Samantha Baranowski converted a lay-up to break a 43-43 tie with 65 seconds left, and the University of Maine women’s basketball team held on for a 49-43 victory over Stony Brook in Wednesday’s America East tournament play-in game at the University of Hartford.
Baranowski led Maine with 16 points and eight rebounds. Danielle Walczak scored 10 points. Brittany Williams added nine points, and Rebecca Knight contributed eight.
Maine improved to 8-22, which includes three wins over Stony Brook (4-26) this year. The eighth-seeded Black Bears now play top-seeded Boston University (22-7) in the quarterfinals Friday at noon.
In the men’s tournament, Maine (12-16) is seeded seventh and will play No. 2 Vermont (20-11) in Saturday’s 6 p.m. quarterfinals.
