Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, is having a closed meeting later this morning at her Capitol Hill office with Gen. David Petraeus, President Obama’s nominee to be director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
Snowe, a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, spoke highly of Petraeus when Obama nominated him in 2010 to be the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan.
It is routine for nominees for top jobs such as CIA director to meet with senators on relevant committees prior to their Senate confirmation vote.
(Updated as of 2:55 p.m. - Snowe had this comment in a statement after the meeting: “I had a very good meeting with General Petraeus. He is a proven leader with a unique perspective and wealth of experience that has served our nation well. In our meeting, we discussed the ongoing operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.S. relationship with Pakistan, and recent events in the Middle East. We discussed how he will approach the role and responsibility of intelligence gathering as well as the need to focus the agency’s resources on existing and emerging threats including cybersecurity. I continue to be impressed by General Petraeus’s depth of understanding and willingness to serve in a public capacity. I look forward to his confirmation hearing.”
