Sen. Susan Collins continued her push this week against the Obama administration’s move to require federal contractors to reveal campaign contributions.
The Maine Republican, along with GOP Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, inserted an amendment into the 2012 National Defense Authorization Bill approved this week by the Senate Armed Services Committee that prohibits the Defense Deparment from collecting information about political contributions by businesses that want to win federal contracts. Collins is a member of the armed services committee and she is the top Republican on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, while Portman is the top Republican on the governmental affairs committee’s contracting oversight subcommittee.
Collins and Portman in May introduced the “Keeping Politics out of Federal Contracting Act of 2011.”
"The president's proposed policy would give the appearance that federal government contracts are related to political contributions,” Collins said in a statement. "Our amendment would keep politics out of the bid process at the Department of Defense. I will continue to press for legislation that would apply this standard across the agencies.”
