A federal grant of nearly $858,000 will provide job training and placement services to more than 200 workers displaced by the closure of the Katahdin Paper Company in East Millinocket, according to Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe.
The Maine Republicans said the grant is coming from the U.S. Department of Labor, out of National Emergency Grant funds. It is up to the secretary of labor to decide whether to release the grant money, which the labor department says is aimed at responding “to large, unexpected economic events which cause significant job losses.”
“This will help displaced workers acquire the employment services and assistance they need to rejoin the workforce,” the senators said in a joint statement.
