Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-1st, was among those lawmakers cheering - and wiping away tears - when Rep. Gabrielle Giffords returned to the House floor Monday night to cast a vote for the debt ceiling agreement.
After weeks of rancor, the return of the Arizona Democrat and shooting survivor was a rare moment of unity and joy on the House floor.
“There was a lot of cheering and a lot of tears when Gabby walked on to the House floor tonight,
Pingree said. "At that moment we weren’t Democrats or Republicans, just colleagues and friends thrilled to have Gabby back with us. Gabby, with her courage and determination, is an inspiration to all of us and a reminder of what is truly important.”
