Sen. Olympia Snowe is among a group of senators who are charter members of a newly formed Senate Oceans Caucus.
Snowe, R-Maine, has been named an honorary co-chair of the caucus, because she will help coordinate its work with the Senate Commerce Committee’s subcommittee on oceans, atmosphere and the Coast Guard. Snowe is the top Republican on that subcommittee.
The mission of the caucus is to “facilitate congressional conversations” about the country’s coasts and oceans and the federal policies that “govern their management, use and protection.”
Other members of the bipartisan caucus include Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass, and Scott Brown, R-Mass. The caucus is led by Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said she likely will join the caucus, as well.
“The Senate Oceans Committee is a major step forward in our recognition of the significant environmental and economic roles played by our oceans,” Snowe said in a statement. She added that the bipartisan effort has the “potential to speak in a loud and unified voice on behalf of our coastal resources, yielding significant economic and environmental benefits for us all.”
