Maine’s GOP senators this morning lauded news of the killing of Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born al Qaida leader in Yemen who was behind such plots as the attempt to hide explosives in printer cartridges on airplanes.
Sen. Olympia Snowe, a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, called al-Awlaki’s death, “Yet another significant and striking blow against a damaged but still dangerous terror network."
Sen. Susan Collins, the top Republican on the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Relations, said she received confirmation of his death from the National Counterterrorism Center.
“He fueled hate against America, and we are safer because al-Awlaki is dead,” Collins said in a statement. “We must nevertheless continue our efforts to combat and discredit the violent Islamist ideology he espoused and disseminated."
