Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Cynthia Dill has launched an online petition aimed at pressuring Independent candidate Angus King to declare whether he would caucus with Democrats or Republicans if elected in November.
King has said that if he wins the race to replace outgoing Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, he will make the decision about which party’s caucus to join – if he joins either – after he arrives in Washington.
Dill, a state senator from Cape Elizabeth who is one of four Democrats and six Republicans trying to win their parties’ U.S. Senate nominations in the June primary, said that “Maine voters are entitled to know” whether King would side with Democrats or Republicans if he goes to Washington.
The party’s caucuses are important for senators, because they decide on committee assignments, and for his part King’s decision on whether to caucus with Democrats or Republicans could decide whether Democrats hold on to their Senate majority.
The petition has so far been signed by 940 people and can be found here.
