WASHINGTON – Sen. Angus King has added a Portland native as well as a Capitol Hill veteran to his Senate staff. U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, meanwhile, has hired a staff director to help in his new responsibilities as the top Democrat on the House Veterans' Affairs Committee.
King selected Chad Metzler, a Wisconsin native with 17 years of experience working in the U.S. Senate, to manage his legislative affairs and agenda in Washington. Metzler previously served as legislative director for Sen. Herb Kohl, a Wisconsin Democrat who retired this month, as well as staff director on the Senate Special Committee on Aging.
Kathryn Shorr, meanwhile, was named scheduling director. Shorr, who is a Portland native, worked for several years in the Washington office of Maine Sen. Susan Collins as well as director of Collins’ 2008 campaign effort among student and young professional voters.
An attorney who graduated from the University of Maine School of Law, Shorr has worked for the past two years in the government and public policy section of the law firm Foley and Lardner LLP.
On the other side of the Capitol, Michaud named Nancy Dolan to be the staff director of the minority office in the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs. Michaud, D-District 2, was recently named the ranking minority member -- or senior Democrat -- on the committee.
A New York native, Dolan currently works as the deputy assistant secretary for policy at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, where she advised top VA officials on policy and resource issues. She previously held several civilian policy and planning positions with the U.S. Navy and worked as a congressional legislative fellow in Michaud’s office in 2008.
