ORONO - Maine football will choose captains via team vote by the week this season, a new method intended to inspire leadership from more players.

The captains chosen to open the season Thursday against Albany are:

Junior tailback Derek Session

Senior linebacker Ryan McCrossan

Senior corner Dominic Cusano

The new method will be a way to inspire leaders said Maine Coach Jack Cosgrove: "It makes more sense and gets everyone involved in leadership. It puts it on our guys to recognize each other."

Session said he was honored his teammates chose him.

"It's a big honor for me. Knowing my teammates see leadership qualities in me motivates you to do those extra things to help lead the team."

News and Notes:

Just about 6,000 tickets have been sold for Thursday's opener at Maine as of Tuesday afternoon.

Interim Athletic Director Steve Abbott, who does not officially begin his post until Sept. 7 will be at Thursday's game. He will be interviewed on the team radio broadcast on Black Bear Sports Network, and WJAB prior to kickoff.

Thursday is  Military Appreciation Day. Active embers of the Armed Forces and veterans get free entry to the game. Call 581-4849.

Thursday is also High School Football Day. Coaches and players in their team jersey will get free entry. Call 581-4849.
