A grandmother was strong-armed on Saturday.

No one came to her aid. In fact, a crowd of people watched it happen and even cheered.

I should probably note that the aforementioned grandma didn't need rescuing. She was Grandma Gristle - and her Coke-bottle glasses and meek, grandmotherly voice belied her old-school ferocity. She took her competitor down with a few wrestles of the arm during the inaugural SLAP Superhero Lady Armwrestlers of Portland event at Mayo Street Arts on Saturday.

Arm wrestling competitors included a lumberjack, a demonslayer, a pirate, a viking and a pimp.

Mayo Street was packed with onlookers who tossed cash into the coffers of their favorite wrestlers. All the money raised went to support two local non-profits: Mayo Street Arts and MENSK.

Competitors included a viking, a queen, a pimp and a grandmother. Elaborate entourages led each wrestler into the room - ahem - I mean "arena."

Duos faced off on a regulation arm wrestling table, and judges (in striped shirts and short shorts) made sure elbows stayed down and both feet remained planted.

Even Godzilla got in on the action, facing off against a competitor from the crowd.

Voom Voom Valhalla (on the right), with her arms of still and wicked-cool viking hat, came out on top.

All were hailed as arm-wielding heroes and given awards.

And most will be back for the next SLAP event, slated for sometime in November. Stay apprised of upcoming events - or join in the arm wrestling action - through the SLAP Superhero Lady Armwrestlers of Portland Facebook page.
