Former WGME-13 meteorologist Sarah Long says she doesn't miss the early mornings or the TV grind. These days when she does get up early it's for things like a recent 5:30 a.m. surfing session.

That little slice of morning enjoyment goes right in line with Long's new career as co-owner, with her husband, Tom, of Long's Board Shop at 209 Western Ave. in South Portland. The duo has a grand opening celebration planned for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Skateboarders are invited to try the setup of boxes and rails in the shop's parking lot and clothing and hats will be 10 percent off. Perry's Sidewalk Cafe will also be on site selling hot dogs and other food items and WinterKids will be on hand to sign up children for their passport program at special early-bird prices.

According to Sarah, anyone who makes a purchase - anything from a sticker to a new board - will be entered in a drawing for a complete setup including an Element board, trucks and wheels. Gift cards, T-shirts and other giveaways will be happening throughout the event.
Long's Board Shop has been open since April 16 and the sign was installed last week. The shop sells skateboards, snowboards and the clothing and equipment needed for both sports.

"We aim to be here for the core skaters with all the gear they need and want but we also want to run a pretty family-friendly shop," Sarah said.
The Longs deem their first month a success and are hoping to build off a good start and a grand opening planned for a day - interestingly enough for a former weather caster - that's expected to be sunny with temps in the mid- to high-70s.
