The Bicycle Coalition of Maine asked Mainers to bike to work today and Portland-area employees answered the call in force. Pedestrians along Congress Street noticed that most parking meters had bikes attached to them and a crowd of people and bikes formed early in Monument Square.

The BCM offered free coffee to bikers between 7 and 9 a.m. at the popular gathering spot. There were also mechanics checking bikes and plenty of information on the BCM, its good works, and its rides.

Coffee by Design is also getting into the act of celebrating cycling today with free coffee upgrades to anyone in a bike helmet. Get your big cup of java at any CBD location.
Those who could make the morning event at Monument Square can still get in on some free stuff this afternoon. The BCM has a "ride home" event planned at Bug Light Park in South Portland between 4 and 5 p.m. Free food, T-shirts for bikers and socks from the BCM.
