Riding for miles and miles through the woods, over single-track bridges and massive boulders may not be for everyone.
But even the most dedicated road cyclist occasional yearns for something other than traffic, dangerous intersections and the debris that's scattered along the roadways.
That may be when a pumped-up summer trip to Camden Snow Bowl is in order. The four-season destination has been home to a pump track since 2008, thanks to the Mid Coast Chapter of the New England Mountain Biking Association.
"We contacted the International Mountain Biking Association for assistance and got a pro trail builder to help us design and build it," says John Anders, president of McNEMBA.
If you're not familiar with pump tracks, they're made up of a series of dirt berms and rollers that keep cyclists constantly going up or down. Riders shouldn't need to pedal through the course, instead using their upper body and legs to "pump" their bike along.
Riders can come out and experience the Camden track for free, but they should expect a workout.
"People who've never ridden one before don't realize how much of a workout it is," Anders says. "They do three laps and they're exhausted. But it's a great skills builder."
