Triathlons have become pretty popular around the state of Maine and plenty of folks have proven they're fit enough to excel in all three disciplines offered - the swim, the bike leg and the run.

The Sunday, Aug. 5 Maine State Triathlon in Bethel offers another chance for those all-around athletes to show what they can do with a 750-meter swim, a 24K bike leg and an 8K run. But something that's a little different about this event is that it makes it OK for competitors to pick two and do just the first two legs of the race as party of the Aquabike challenge.

The fee for the Aquabike competition is $69 and online registration closes Friday, Aug. 3 at noon. You can submit a paper application through Saturday but there will be no day-of registration.

The race starts at 8 a.m. and there will be plenty of great spots for spectators to cheer on their favorites. The swim start is at the Bethel Inn Lakehouse and swimmers will be taking on the waters of Songo Pond. Bikers and runners will be competing along routes 5 and 35. Click here for a PDF of the course routes.

Aquabikers will follow the same routes as those completing all three legs but instead of heading into the transition station to change into running duds they'll instead head to the finish line and inform volunteers that they're done for the day.

Those who want to make it a family affair in Bethel this weekend can also get the little ones signed up for the Maine State Kids' Triathlon on Saturday. It consists of a 100-yard swim, 3-mile cycle and 1-mile run. Children ages 8 to 14 can compete in this untimed event.
