Twenty years is a long time to run an event, but the fact that Cliff Krolick at Back Country Excursions has already hosted his annual Mountain Bike Microbrew Festival sure proved that bikes and beers go together.

The 2013 version of the festival begins Friday at noon with plnety of guided rides on Back Country's single-track trails. The evening features a potluck "extravaganza" (bring your favorite dish to share) and entertainment from Jeffrey Cusack around the campfire.

Since Gritty McDuff's is the craft brew sponsor, there will be plenty of Gritty's beet on tap all weekend.

The mountain biking fun continues Saturday a.m. with a post-breakfast instructional session for newbies. "Over the years we've learned that it's better for novice riders to have the chance to work on fundamentals like shifting gears and body weight then it is to have them distracted by too many objects like roots and rocks on some trails," Krolick wrote in an email.

Everyone's invited to head out for afternoon rides after a burrito lunch that's included in the weekend event cost of $200 per person (two nights of camping included). Those who want to take a break from the trails can take a dip in nearby Long Pond.

Saturday evening's entertainment features a lobster/clam bake, more Gritty's beer and Northern Roots, a folk duo from Eliot.

Riding continues Sunday before and after brunch, when Back Country guides will take riders along whatever trails they want before they pack up and head home.

Call 207-625-8189 or email bcountry@psouth.net to sign up for the weekend or for more details.

And don't forget to BYOBike.
