Thanks mostly to the efforts of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, our state is consistently listed among the top bike-friendly states in the country.

Now, also thanks to the BCM, Mainers and out-of-staters alike will get the chance to see what the Pine Tree State has to offer on a week-long BikeMaine tour.

"... we wanted to create a signature ride that showcases the best of Maine - from lobster and landscapes to small towns and great people - in a week-long rolling adventure," said BikeMaine ride committee chair Mark Ishkanian.

Ride enthusiasts will need to be a little patient - the inaugural ride won't take place until Sept. 7-14, 2013 - but it sure sounds like the wait will be worth it. BikeMaine is modeled after CycleOregon, a wildly popular annual adventure that will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year.

BCM Executive Director Nancy Grant said the route for the 2013 ride is still top secret and won't be announced until just before registration begins next winter. The debut event will be limited to 350 riders.

The fees are also not yet known but a press release from BCM did say that meals, rest stops, baggage transport, SAG support, entertainment and camping will be included in the price. Participants are expected to supply their own tent and camping equipment.

Be sure to check the BCM website frequently for more on the new event.
