The Red Sox survived an emotional 2-1 win over the Yankees Monday, but can hardly sit back and reflect on the memory.
Three games in Toronto. Three games in Texas. Six tough games that could sink the Sox.
Wild card race: Tampa Bay 68-44; Boston 64-49 (4.5 back); White Sox/Twins 63-49 (5 back)
Boston turns to Daisuke Matsuzaka (8-3, 2.96). He may not be the star people envisioned, but he can be very effective. The Jays counter with Ricky Romero, who beat the Yankees with a complete game his last time out.
The Rays are playing the limping Tigers. And even though Tampa Bay lost pitcher Wade Davis to injury, replacement Jeremy Hellickson (1-0, 2.57) may be better.
Carlos Delgado made his Red Sox organization debut, going 0-for-3 as the Pawtucket DH ... Yamaico Navarro went 2-for-4 ... and Bubba Bell, after 18 days on the DL, is back and went 3-for-4. He's batting .297.
Finally, our thoughts and prayers go out to Ron Johnson and his family. Johnson, the former Sea Dogs manager who is the first base coach for Boston, has been on personal leave, attending to his daughter Bridget. She was struck by a car while riding her horse near the Johnson's home in Morrison, Tenn. Bridget, who turns 11 Wednesday, is recovering in a hospital. A Nashville television station has the story.Tweet
