Ever since Manny Delcarmen moved from the Portland Sea Dogs to the Boston Red Sox in 2005, we have heard what great stuff he has. And Delcarmen did some good things with Boston, especially in the 2007 championship run.
But Delcarmen, 28, has also been inconsistent. He had a 4.70 ERA this season before the Red Sox traded him today to Colorado for Class A pitcher Chris Balcom-Miller. In the South Atlantic League, Balcom-Miller was 6-7 with a 3.31 ERA, with an eye-opening 117 strikeouts in 108 innings, with only 19 walks.
The Sea Dogs made a much more minor move, welcoming Lowell outfielder Bryan Peterson, 20, to fill in for its declining roster. Third baseman Ray Chang has a broken middle finger on his right hand and outfielder Chih-Hsien Chiang has a sore left wrist. Also, shortstop Jose Iglesias is getting a day off.
Here are the Red Sox and Sea Dogs lineups tonight:
BOSTON: Scutaro SS; McDonald CF; Martinez C; Ortiz DH; Beltre DH; Lowell 1B; Drew RF; Lowrie 2B; Hall LF; (Beckett P)
PORTLAND: Spears SS; Lin CF; Rizzo 1B; Lavarnway DH; Exposito C; Padron LF; Khoury 2B; Linares RF; Vazquez 3B; (Fife P)
