The Red Sox score nine runs and lose 11-9 to Toronto.
The Yankees get two home runs from Alex Rodriguez, a solo shot and a three-run homer in the ninth to beat Baltimore 4-3.
AL East: NYY 89-58; TB 88-58 (0.5 back); BOS 82-65 (7 back).
John Lackey took the loss for Boston, allowing seven runs (six earned) over 4 1/3 innings. Through June, Boston did not worry about Lackey. Although his ERA was 4.46, he had a 9-3 record.
But Lackey has lost his last four games and is 3-8 since June. Those three wins came against Seattle (worst-hitting team in the AL) and two vs. the Angels (10th worst at the plate). His ERA is up to 4.63.
Lackey has pitched 194 innings and he has 12 wins. After awarding him a $82.5-million contract, Boston expected more.
