After two straight losses at home, the Red Sox (82-66) trail the Yankees (90-58) by 8 games, and the Rays (89-58) by 7.5.
Red Sox fans were looking forward to next weekend's games in the Bronx. Now Boston could be mathematically eliminated by then.
The Red Sox announced their minor league awards and four players from the 2010 Sea Dogs were among the those honored: Pitcher: Felix Doubront. Co-Offensive Players: Anthony Rizzo and Ryan Lavarnway; Defensive Player: Che-Hsuan Lin. Also, Greenville outfielder Jeremy Hazelbaker was chosen Baserunner of the Year after stealing 63 bases.
Not surprisingly, all five of those players made our second annual Top Prospects list (now expanded to 31). See today's column.
In other minor league news, Altoona beat Trenton 5-2 to clinch the Eastern League championship (3 games to 1), and Lakewood topped Greenville 4-2 for the South Atlantic League title.
