A report out of Venezuela has Victor Martinez ready to sign with the Detroit Tigers for four years and $50-million. Fox News reported that Martinez will likely make it official this weekend.
If Martinez does indeed sign with the Tigers, then Boston will receive two draft picks as compensation.
It also means that Jarrod Saltamacchia would become the No. 1 catcher for Boston. And it may motivate the Red Sox to sign Jason Varitek as a back-up and mentor.
Besides Saltalamacchia, the only catchers on the Red Sox 40-man roster are Mark Wagner and Luis Expositio. Both are expected in Pawtucket this year.Tweet
