Jason Varitek has signed a $2-million one-year contract with the Red Sox, according to the Boston Globe.
The deal also includes $300,000 in incentives.
After letting Victor Martinez go, the Red Sox now have their two catchers - Varitek and Jarrod Saltalamacchia.
Both are switch-hitters but Saltalamacchia is much better against right-handers, and Varitek better against lefties. A platoon system looks likely.
Now comes the question that I posed in a previous blog. Who catches Wakefield's knuckleball?
