If John Lackey stays on his rehab schedule, he could end up pitching for the Portland Sea Dogs, but not at Hadlock Field.
According to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe, Lackey is scheduled to make a rehab start on May 31. Triple-A Pawtucket is home that night and that normally is the preference for major league rehabs.
But the Sea Dogs have a doubleheader that night in New Britain, CT (not too far away), and Portland could use an extra arm that night.
Always fun to try and figure these things out.
Meanwhile, the Portland pitching staff is down one as Brock Huntzinger (2-4, 8.44) went on the disabled list with a lacerated finger. Huntzinger was scheduled to pitch Thursday. Another pitcher is expected to be added to the roster before then.
Sea Dogs catcher/DH Ryan Lavarnway is out of the lineup for a second day because of lower back stiffness. But that is more of a precaution. He expects to play Wednesday.
Reports from the Boston media have Hideki Okajima accepting an assignment to Pawtucket.
Now for the lineups:
BOSTON: Ellsbury, Lowrie, Gonzalez, Youkilis, Ortiz, Drew, Crawford, Varitek, Sutton (2B). (Beckett P).
PORTLAND: Hazelbaker CF, Hassan LF, Chiang RF, Federowicz C, Middlebrooks 3B, Padron 1B, Tejeda 2B, Hee SS, Dening DH. (Lee P).
