J.D. Drew, 35, is being given the day off today, although he is healthy. But he is slumping (.228) and Red Sox manager Terry Francona said he figured he would pull him from a day game after having played a game the night before.
Francona said he thought Josh Reddick, 24, would provide more energy today.
Reddick also brings a hot bat, having hit 12 home runs in 44 Pawtucket games, Reddick has played only three games since being called up to Boston. Still, he is hitting .556 (5-for-9) with 4 RBI.
Tim Wakefield goes today for Boston. He seems likely to stay in the rotation, even after John Lackey returns this Sunday.
Wakefield's place in the rotation could be indefinite given the unknown status of Daisuke Matsuzaka. He is due back to Boston tonight after receiving a second opinion on his sore elbow. The Red Sox appear to be looking at a long rehab, but Francona said a timetable has not been established.
