Lots of news on pitchers, including reports that Daisuke Matsuzaka will need Tommy John surgery. Of course, the Red Sox rather him take a more cautious approach since TJ surgery means he is done with Boston.
Is that a bad thing?
Stay tuned on that one.
Is Kevin Millwood an option to replace Dice-K in the rotation. So far, it looks like he has a ways to go. He started in Pawtucket Wednesday: 2 2/3 5 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 3 K.
Matt Fox (2.73) looked good in relief for the PawSox: 3 IP, 2 H, ) R, 1 BB, 5 K. Fox was not one of the bullpen options I mentioned when looking at the Red Sox bullpen in Today's Column.
Stolmy Pimentel (8.62) had another stormy start for Portland: 1 1/3 IP, 5 H, 8 R, 2 BB, 1 K.
Fortunately for the Sea Dogs, they broke out the bats, including 4 hits apiece from catchers Tim Federowicz (.282) and Ryan Lavarnway (.281). Lavarnway hit his 12th home run.
Junichi Tazawa, coming back from TJ surgery, pitched two no-hit innings for Salem: 1 BB, 2 K.
Miles Head (.2139) hit his 12th home runs for Greenville.
