Now that Daisuke Matsuzaka is likely gone for the rest of his Red Sox career, having undergone Tommy John surgery, what of the lesser-known Japanese starter?
Junichi Tazawa, coming back from TJ surgery last spring, threw four shutout innings for Salem on Saturday: 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. Maybe his next rehab is in Portland, before he is assigned to Pawtucket.
Two other former Sea Dogs pitchers made relief appearances for Boston, in the romp over Toronto. Tommy Hottovy and Michael Bowden both pitched a shutout inning. Neither allowed a hit, but Hottovy walked two and Bowden one.
Speaking of Dice-K, he is one of the salary busts for Boston. The Yankees have their own (Jorge Posada). Looking at the salaries in 2013, New York could be in trouble with some older guys. See today's On Baseball Column.
Also in today's paper are Sea Dogs notes, looking at the team's recent moves, including Will Vazquez's retirement.
Will check back from Hadlock ... hoping it is dry.
