So Miguel Gonzalez got hit hard Monday and was promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Jeremy Kehrt pitched six gutsy innings Monday and got demoted to Class A Salem.
Confused? Here is a two-word answer: paper moves.
The Sea Dogs have a doubleheader tonight and a noon game Thursday. They need fresh pitchers. So Gonzalez, Kehrt and Cesar Cabral (temporarily inactive) were taken off the roster. Gonzalez and Kehrt are still here, but "officially" on the other teams' rosters.
Portland is still not in great shape for pitching tonight. Blake Maxwell is coming back from Triple-A and is due in around game time. Michael Lee was activated from the DL and he will start game two (pushing the rest of the rotation back a day).
The Sea Dogs also activated infielder Tony Thomas. He was the player acquired from the Cubs for reliever Robert Coello in the off-season.
Alex Wilson and Lee will start. Three relievers are available for help (Maxwell is a fourth in an emergency. He did throw two innings for Pawtucket on Monday).
In other news, third baseman Will Middlebrooks is due back from Lowell on Thursday. He is tentatively scheduled to be the DH on Thursday and, possibly, play third on Friday.
As always, we will be on twitter during the game (ClearTheBases).
