Stolmy Pimentel will not start for the Sea Dogs tonight as scheduled because the Sea Dogs bullpen may not be able to support him.
Pimentel (0-8, 9.20) has been limited to three or fewer in his last four starts, as the Red Sox try to get their pitching prospect back on track.
But the Sea Dogs bullpen has been taxed recently and would be stretched to covered six-plus innings tonight. Instead, Stephen Fife will be pushed up a day and start tonight. Fife is still going on the standard four-days of rest.
Pimentel has been pushed back to Saturday. Brock Huntzinger will start Friday.
The Sea Dogs made a couple of roster moves, welcoming Will Middlebrooks back from his rehab with Lowell. He replaces infielder Tony Thomas, who was promoted to Pawtucket.
Thomas replaces former Sea Dogs infielder Yamaico Navarro, who was called up to the Boston Red Sox. Navarro was needed as a back-up because Kevin Youkilis could not play.
But Navarro has also been playing the outfielder in Pawtucket, and the Red Sox need a strong right-handed hitting outfielder.
Navarro replaced outfielder Mike Cameron, who was designated for assignment.
Concerning a Wednesday transaction, I initially reported that Jorge Padron's demotion to Class A Salem was simply a paper move. Wrong. Padron ended up going down to Salem.
Here is the Sea Dogs lineup for tonight: Hazelbaker CF, Khoury SS, Chiang RF, Federowicz C, Middlebrooks DH, Rodriguez 1B, Tejeda 2B, Hee 3B, Dening LF (Fife P).
TweetKevin Thomas covers baseball and basketball for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. He wisely moved to Maine in 1994 after working for the St. Petersburg Times. He is married to Nancy and they have nine children.
