After going 0 for his first 6 at-bats in the majors, Ryan Lavarnway is 5-of-9 with two RBI. Overall, he is batting .333 with 2 RBI, 2 BB and an .812 OPS.
Got a feeling the Red Sox are going to want that right-handed bat available in the playoffs.
The Yankees, Red Sox, Rays and Angels all won on Sunday. The standings:
AL East
New York 77-48
Boston 77-49 (.5 back)
Tampa Bay 69-56 (8)
Wild Card
Boston 77-49
Tampa Bay 69-56 (7.5 back)
Angels 69-59 (9 back)
In regards to the Wild Card, the Red Sox magic number for beating out Tampa Bay is 30 (the combination of Red Sox wins and Tampa Bay losses needed for Boston to finish ahead of the Rays.
Concerning the Angels, the Red Sox magic number is 27.
Thoughts of Felix Doubront helping the Red Sox in the playoff stretch took a bad turn Sunday. Doubront was lifted in the second inning, with no outs. His line: 1 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 2 K.
Junichi Tazawa look solid in relief, however: 2 2/3 IP, 3 K. He has not allowed a run in four Triple-A appearances (10 1/3 innings).
The Sea Dogs lost and Brock Huntzinger gave up four earned runs. But Huntzinger is looking more and more like a prospect worth holding onto. See the Press Herald story.
Portland first baseman Reynaldo Rodriguez, who missed over a month after an appendectomy, went 3-for-5 with a HR. In 34 Double-A games, he's batting .293 with 7 HR and an .882 OPS.
