Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine announced that Felix Doubront and Daniel Bard will the Nos. 4 and 5 starter for Boston when the season begins this week, according to media reports out of Fort Myers.
Alfredo Aceves will go to the bullpen, where he will be needed, especially with Andrew Bailey possibly headed to the disabled list with a thumb injury.
In other Red Sox news, catcher Ryan Lavarnway has been sent down to Triple-A.
Meanwhile, some of the 2012 Sea Dogs roster team is already headed to Portland. The Red Sox will not release the roster until it is finalized.
Here are the Sea Dogs we know are coming, based on their own announcements (especially in Twitter) and the talks with the media:
Pitchers: Anthony Ranaudo, Stolmy Pimentel, Caleb Clay, Will Latimer and Aaron Kurcz
Catcher Jayson Hernandez.
Infielders Heiker Meneses and Kolbrin Vitek
Outfielders Bryce Brentz, Peter Hissey and Jeremy Hazelbaker.
Among the others expected to be on the roster:
Pitchers Chris Hernandez, Chris Balcom-Miller, Josh Fields, Brock Huntzinger, and Chris Martin.
Catcher Dan Butler (currently in major league camp).
Infielders Reynaldo Rodriguez, Ryan Dent and Jon Hee
Outfield Oscar Tejeda.
Also, shortstop Derrick Gibson could be coming, as well as catcher Matt Spring (Double-A rosters have been expanded to 25 so Portland could carry three catchers).
In other news, outfielder Alex Hassan has made the Triple-A roster, while left-handed pitching prospect Drake Britton is headed back to advanced Class A Salem. He could be in Portland by mid-season.
Red Sox Director of Player Development Ben Crockett and roster will be finalized once the major league roster is set and players are sent down to the minor leagues.
