According to Red Sox beat reporters in Detroit, Boston manager Bobby Valentine has called on Alfredo Aceves to be the team's new closer, in wake of the thumb injury that will sideline Andrew Bailey for up to four months.
Valentine also said Josh Beckett, who reportedly had a minor thumb injury, is ready to start Boston's Game 2 on Saturday.
With the season-opener Thursday, here is the Red Sox roster:
Starting pitchers: Jon Lester, Josh Beckett, Clay Buchholz, Felix Doubront, Daniel Bard.
Relievers: Alfredo Aceves, Matt Albers, Scott Atchison, Michael Bowden, Mark Melancon, Franklin Morales, Vicente Padilla, Justin Thomas.
Catchers: Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Kelly Shoppach.
Infielders: Adrian Gonzalez, Dustin Pedroia, Mike Aviles, Kevin Youkilis, Nick Punto.
Outfielders: Cody Ross, Jacoby Ellsbury, Ryan Sweeney, Darnell McDonald.
Designated hitter: David Ortiz
Thursday's game is at 1 p.m.
