The Red Sox officially made a trio of expected moves late Thursday, sending Jose Iglesias to Pawtucket, calling up pitcher Aaron Cook (who will start Saturday) and, to make room for Cook on the 40-man roster, placing Carl Crawford on the 60-day disabled list.
Iglesias knows he has to hit better to stay up in the majors. He went 2-for-3 Thursday for Pawtucket. The average inched up to .216 ... first baseman Mauro Gomez (.320) was 2-for-5 with his ninth home run).
Reliever Junichi Tazawa was recently demoted to Triple-A - not because of performance (he had a 0.00 ERA), but he was the only one who had minor league options left. In his first outing back with Pawtucket, Tazawa faced 7 batters - 5 strikeouts and 2 ground outs.
Stolmy Pimentel made his second start of the season for the Sea Dogs: 4 1/3 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 3 K. (He gave up 2 hits, 2 walks and 2 runs in the 5th inning). Pimentel continues to show the live arm (the fastball was consistently at 95), but his command was off. He threw a first-pitch strike to only five of the 20 batters he faced.
J.C. Linares (.263) was 2-for-4 with his 5th home run ... Oscar Tejeda (.287) was 2-for-5 with 2 doubles.
The Sea Dogs' bullpen continues to falter. Portland has allowed the winning run to score in the ninth inning in each of the past three games ... The Sea Dogs (7-20) have the second-worst record in minor league baseball, behind the Rome (Ga.) Braves (6-20) of the low Class A South Atlantic League.
Outfielder Jackie Bradley (.360) went 2-for-3 with his second home run for Salem ... Travis Shaw (.356) was 2-for-3 with a double ... Ryan Pressley (7.06) is starting to pitch better and had his best outing this year: 6 IP, 2 H, 7 K.
Left-hander Miguel Pena, 21, a sixth-round draft pick last June, has a 2.13 ERA in Greenville. He pitched 6 innings Thursday: 6 H, 2 R (1 ER), 0 BB, 5 K.
Boston was off Thursday and welcomes the Orioles today.
Lefty Jon Lester (1-2, 4.65) goes against lefty Wei-Yin Chen (2-0, 2.22).
