Sea Dogs pitcher Anthony Ranaudo will not make his scheduled start tonight. Portland manager Kevin Boles said nothing is wrong with Ranaudo, but he is getting some extra rest.
The Red Sox routinely have their young prospects skip a start or two during the season. Ranaudo should be back next week.
Chris Hernandez (3-6, 2.89), a solid lefty with lousy run support, moves his start up a day, to tonight. Drake Britton will start Wednesday, and Chris Martin is Thursday's starter.
Reports out of Boston have outfielder Cody Ross expected to be activated today, with Scott Podsednik going on the DL.
The Sox lineup: Aviles SS, Pedroia 2B, Gonzalez RF, Ortiz DH, Youkilis 1B, Middlebrooks 3B, Ross LF, Kalish CF, Shoppach C (Buchholz P).
The Sea Dogs lineup: Hazelbaker DH, Tejeda LF, Linares CF, Rodriguez 1B, Brentz RF, Smith 3B, Butler C, Gibson SS, Dent 2B (Hernandez P).
Derrick Gibson just came off the DL and infielder Zach Gentile (shin bruise) joined the DL.
Marquez Smith is the new third baseman. A former Triple-A player with the Cubs, Smith was with the independent Camden Riversharks when the Red Sox signed him last week.
Sea Dogs third baseman Kolbrin Vitek has been on the DL since May 23 with an intercostal (back rib muscle) strain. Vitek cannot yet swing a bat. "It's going to take a little bit of time," Boles said.
As for outfielder Jackie Bradley joining the Sea Dogs later this week, the Sea Dogs had no official comment. But there was no denials, either.
The only question is who will Bradley replace. Will Juan Carlos Linares (.343 average) finally go back to Pawtucket?
