Several performances to mention (good and not-so-good)
Former Sea Dogs/Red Sox right-hander Justin Masterson (4-6, 3.98) pitched a complete game against the Reds (9 IP, 3 H, 1 R [0 ER], 0 BB, 9 K).
Another Dogs/Sox alum, Brandon Moss (.279), hit another home run for Oakland. That's seven home runs in 13 games since he's been called up.
As much as David Ortiz's grand slam was the big hit for Boston Wednesday, Will Middlebrooks (.303) entered the game and got one at-bat - his 7th home run in 37 games.
Daniel Nava (.333) did OK for himself with a 4-for-5 night.
We wrote Wednesday after Clay Buchholz's generous run support from his teammates. Felix Doubront (8-3, 4.31) is getting help as well. He picked up the win Wednesday (6 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 4 K). Did you notice zero walks for Felix?
Pawtucket's Ryan Lavarnway (.306) went 4-for-4 with a double and walk. He's batting .404 in June.
Daniel Bard relieved for the PawSox (any doubt he is no longer a starter?) and blew the save. With Pawtucket up 5-3, Bard allowed a lead-off double in the ninth, and then a single. After that: wild pitch (run scored), out, out, wild pitch (tying run scored).
Drake Britton had a tough outing for the Sea Dogs (3 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 1 BB, 1 K). But both the opposition and the Sea Dogs manager said Britton had good stuff. See the story.
Jeremy Hazelbaker (.244) hit his 8th and 9th home runs in the game ... Another outfielder, Juan Carlos Linares, was told after the game that he is headed for Pawtucket.
Linares departure makes room for Jackie Bradley, up from Salem, where he batted .359 and turned heads with his defense in center field.
The Sea Dogs (Chris Martin) go tonight at 6 p.m., the Red Sox (Daisuke Matsuzaka) at 7 p.m.
