When I entered my tent last week, sans the laptop, the Red Sox were 53-55, in fourth place in the AL East, 10 games behind the Yankees. In the Wild Card race they were in the sixth place, five games behind.
While I was away, Boston went 4-4, still in fourth place (now 11.5 games back) and in sixth place in the Wild Card, now 5.5 games back.
So much has changed ...
David Ortiz has yet to emerge from the disabled list, and the enjoyable season of Will Middlebrooks was ended with a pitch that broke his wrist.
One bit of good news on the DL front: reliever Andrew Bailey is reportedly set to finally join the team after injuring his thumb during training.
Two other major league notes: Derek Lowe was picked up by the Yankees and instantly looked in prime form Monday, recording a save with four innings of work: 2 H, 4 K.
And, of course, the big news in Red Sox Nation is the passing of Johnny Pesky at the age of 92. R.I.P. to a very nice man.
In the minors, Chris Hernandez rebounded from his one bad Triple-A start, to pitch a gem: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K's. He has a 3.65 ERA in five starts. In his previous start, he allowed 5 ER in 2 innings. In his other four starts, he's allowed 5 ER in 22 2/3 innings.
The Sea Dogs play their first home game in August, tonight at 7. Starter Brandon Workman (7-7, 3.40 in Salem) is expected to make his Double-A debut, while Xander Bogaerts (.429 in 3 Double-A games) makes his Hadlock Field debut.
The Sea Dogs play the Altoona Curve, which features former Sea Dogs infielder/outfielder Oscar Tejeda. This year, Tejeda batted .262 with 5 HR in 51 games with the Sea Dogs. Not much has changed in Altoona. In 35 games, he is batting .262 with 3 HR.
