You thought last September was bad? Boston went 7-20 in 2012.

The Red Sox are 1-6 so far this month (after a 9-20 August).

(Actually, last September was much worse because the Red Sox lost a huge lead. This Boston team has been out of it for a while).

Tim Britton of the Providence Journal pointed out that this is the first time Boston (63-77) has been 14 games under .500 since 1996.

This is not Bobby Valentine's fault. But neither does he appear to be the leader Boston needs in future seasons. See TODAY'S COLUMN.

As for the future, doesn't look like Boston will be interested in re-signing Daisuke Matsuzaka, he of the 1-5 record and 7.20 ERA. He got four outs Saturday and gave up five runs - never a good ratio.

On the bright side, Boston is looking at the 8th pick in next year's draft right now. And with a little better effort by Kansas City, Miami and Cleveland, the Red Sox could have a Top 5 pick. (See standings below).

In the standings, you will see Baltimore tied with the Yankees again. Although the Orioles lost Nick Markakis with a broken left thumb.

The Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox, which has several former Sea Dogs, advanced to the International League championship series against Charlotte (starting Tuesday in Pawtucket).

Pawtucket eliminated the Triple-A Yankees 3 games to 1, clinching with a 7-1 decision Saturday. Veteran Nelson Figueroa, 32, released by the Yankees this year, pitched a two-hitter over 8 innings, allowing 1 run and 1 walk, striking out 8. Alex Wilson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

Bryce Brentz (2-for-3) batted .429 in the series. Juan Carlos Linares (1-for-3) batted .417.

Now for those standings:
