The Yankees romped over the Red Sox in the last regular season game. That seemed to wrap everything up for the Red Sox. Yankees delight, while Boston is overmatched again.
Adding to the symbolism, Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched for Boston. See Today's Column.
Changes are coming for the Red Sox. Manager Bobby Valentine will be fired. Boston's front office should end that drama soon and do it quickly (today).
The Red Sox finished 69-93, bad enough to receive the No. 7 overall pick in the 2013 draft. See the standings:

Yankees 95-67

For all the talk about success and failure, we are constantly reminded that this is just a game. That fact came crashing down when A's reliever Pat Neshek announced Wednesday night that his newborn son had died.
Suddenly, winning or losing a game means so little. My family's prayers go out to the Neshek family.
