While all the talk after the Orioles-Yankees game concerned Raul Ibanez, who hit two HR's in the NYY's 3-2 comeback win in 12 innings, folks in Maine might also be chatting about the first home run of the game.
Portland's Ryan Flaherty gave the Orioles a 1-0 lead. See the highlight. You can also check out the column we wrote at the end of the season about Flaherty's wild ride.
As for Ibanez, his 9th HR to tie the game came when he was pinch-hitting for Alex Rodriguez. The game-winner came when he led off the 12th.
Ibanez makes $1.1-million on a one-year contract.
A-Rod makes $30-million this year and has five more years left (and $118-million) left on his contract.
New York Post columnist Joel Sherman looks at the two players, who were once teammates in the Mariners farm system.
As for the Orioles starter Miguel Gonzalez, his breakout year has the Red Sox wondering why they didn't see that from him last year, when he was in Boston's farm system. Gonzalez was 0-5 last year in Portland with a 6.17 ERA, in 15 games (six starts).
This year in Baltimore: 9-4, 3.25. He went 7 innings Wednesday: 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 8 K. It should have been a shutout performance if center fielder Adam Jones did not misplay a Derek Jeter fly ball into a RBI triple.
