The Red Sox made a minor league deal last year at the trade deadline, sending first baseman Lars Anderson to the Indians for knuckleball pitcher Steven Wright.
Wright rescued the Red Sox Thursday after Ryan Dempster game up seven runs in three innings. Wright: 5 2/3, 3 H, 0 R, 2 Bb, 3 K. He got the win in the Red Sox 8-7 10-inning win over the Mariners.
Pawtucket lost. Xander Bogaerts (.267) hit his seventh home run (in 28 Triple-A games). Bogaerts has a .357 OBP, .475 slugging (.885 OPS). Impressive, especially when you consider Bogaerts was hitting .167 through his first 10 games (.323 since).
Will Middlebrooks (.256) went 1-for-4. Since Middlebrooks had his big four-hit, two-homer game for the PawSox, he is 5-for-36 (.139) with no home runs. See the outstanding piece by Providence Journal's Brian MacPherson on Middlebrooks. Pawtucket manager Gary DiSarcina says that Middlebrooks had a false sense of security in the majors, although he had not been up there that long.
Garin Cecchini was a combined 1-for-7 in Binghamton (completion of one game, then a second). Still he is batting .385 in 18 Double-A games, with a .487 OBP. Cecchini was named to replace a player on the U.S. team in Sunday's Major League Futures Game in New York joining Anthony Ranaudo on the U.S. team; Bogaerts is on the World team).
Outfielder Brandon Jacobs was promoted to the Sea Dogs. He went a combined 2-for-6 on Thursday.
Salem lefty Henry Owens rebounded from a terrible outing (2 IP, 5 R) last time out with a solid 6 2/3 IP: 3 H, 2 R (0 ER), 4 BB, 4 K. ERA down to 3.14, but he has walked 14 in his last three games.Tweet
