Stephen Drew provided the excitement with his three-run homer in the ninth to push the Red Sox to victory, but the bullpen also saved the day. Junichi Tazawa retired all six batters he faced (2 K's) and Koji Uehara picked up his 11th save.

That helped overshadow another shaky start by Ryan Dempster: 6 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 0 BB, 7 K. ERA is now 4.67.

The Sox won and the Rays lost. Here are the standings:

AL EAST
Red Sox 70-46
Rays 66-47 (2.5 games back)
Orioles 63-51 (6)
Yankees 57-56 (11.5)
Jays 53-61 (16)

The Sea Dogs play at noon today. Here is Portland's lineup:

Shannon Wilkerson CF
Garin Cecchini 3B
Christian Vazquez C
Travis Shaw DH

Portland has lost 6 of its last 8 games but remains in the playoff hunt:

EL East Wild Card Race
Trenton 59-57
Portland 56-60 (3 games back)
New Hampshire 55-59 (3)
New Britain 55-61 (4)

While the Sea Dogs lost Wednesday night, it was an encouraging game for lefty Chris Hernandez. See today's story.
