Earlier, Farrell set the Red Sox roster. The final choice was Felix Doubront over Matt Thornton in the bullpen.
"(Doubront's) ability to pitch multiple innings for us," Farrell explained. "It came down basically to the ability to go long."
With Doubront on the roster, Ryan Dempster, another starter all year, will not have to be the long guy.
""We don't have to hold him back," Farrell said. "If we feel like there's a match-up that's on our advantage, whether it's middle innings, late in the game, he's a possibility in this spot.
"Felix's presence on the roster gives us more flexibility in Ryan's usage."
Here is the Red Sox roster:
PITCHERS (11): Craig Breslow, Clay Buchholz, Ryan Dempster, Felix Doubront, Jake Peavy, John Lackey, Jon Lester, Franklin Morales, Junichi Tazawa, Koji Uehara, Brandon Workman.
CATCHERS (2): David Ross, Jarrod Saltalamacchia.
INFIELDERS (6): Xander Bogaerts, Stephen Drew, Will Middlebrooks, Mike Napoli, David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia.
OUTFIELDERS (6): Quintin Berry, Mike Carp, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jonny Gomes, Daniel Nava, Shane Victorino.
Outside batting practice was canceled because of the occasional sprinkles. There might be a slight delay today, but nothing serious is expected.
