Good Saturday to you. The Red Sox made some roster moves Friday, and there are still some vacancies to be filled.
Here is what we know so far:
Starters: Beckett, Lester, Lackey, Wakefield and Buchholz.
Relievers: Papelbon, Bard, Okajima, Delcarmen and Ramirez.
Catchers: Victor Martinez, Jason Varitek.
Infielders: Youkilis, Pedroia, Scutaro and Beltre.
Outfielders: Drew, Cameron, Ellsbury and Hermida.
Designated hitter: Ortiz.
That totals 21 players, leaving room for two more relievers and two utility players.
The candidates:
Utility: Bill Hall, Tug Hulett, Kevin Frandsen and Mike Lowell. Hall appears to have one spot, with Hulett and Frandsen battling for the other. Lowell appears headed to the DL, especially after suffering a nasty contusion on a foul ball off his left knee on Friday.
Relievers: Scott Atchison, Boof Bonser, Alan Embree, Joe Nelson and Scott Schoeneweis. Bonser was slowed recently with a groin strain but he is pitching again. He could go on the DL briefly. Embree could remain in spring training, working his way into shape. Schoeneweis was just added so the Red Sox will evaluate him carefully. Atchison is on the 40-man roster, but Nelson is experienced and has looked good in camp.
The wildcard: Daisuke Matsuzaka. Easy to forget him, but he should be ready to go in late April. All the Red Sox have to do is find room for him.
The Red Sox travel to Sarasota today to face the Orioles. I'll be going to the minor league camp and will check in later.
