Boston manager Terry Francona had once considered hitting J.D. Drew after David Ortiz, but opted to insert right-handed hitting Adrian Beltre between the two lefties. "I'd like to keep those two (Drew and Ortiz) separated," said Francona who would not commit to the lineup in future games. "We'll see."
Tonight will break Jason Varitek's streak of 10 straight opening-day starts. Francona does not know when Varitek will get in. He will be used to give Victor Martinez a rest, "but we have a lot of days off," Francona said. Before Boston plays its eighth game it will have three days off, including Monday.
The Pawtucket Red Sox are getting some major league starters with two pithers on the major league DL. Boof Bonser will start the PawSox's season opener on Thursday, and Daisuke Matsuzaka will pitch Saturday. Francona said that Matsuzaka will likely need at least three minor league starts. "The more he pitches, the better off we'll be," Francona said.
Keri Hilson will perform the National Anthem. If it goes like rehearsal, it will be a long rendition.
Enjoy the game.Tweet
