The Red Sox announced that Josh Beckett's first rehab start will be against the rookies of the Gulf Coast League in Florida on Tuesday. It had been thought that Beckett might come to Portland, since Pawtucket was on the road next Tuesday.
The decision is based on convenience, since Beckett plans to travel with the Red Sox to St. Petersburg next week when Boston plays the Rays.
Among the official roster moves the Sox made today are the addition of reliever Robert Manual (replacing injured Manny Delcarmen), catcher Kevin Cash (for injured Jason Varitek) and infielder Nueman Romera (for traded Angel Sanchez). Romera, who used to be in the Indians organization, was signed right before the season.
Cash is in the lineup tonight. Daniel Nava is surprisingly not, with the Red Sox opting to go with recently-acquired Eric Patterson in left.
Here is Boston's lineup: Scutaro SS; Patterson LF; Ortiz DH; Youkilis 1B; Beltre 3B; Drew RF; Hall 2B; Cameron CF; Cash C; (Wakefield P)
In Sea Dogs news, reliever Jason Rice was added to the East team for the Eastern League All-Star Game. Rice replaces Sea Dogs starter Stephen Fife, who will be unavailable to pitch in the game, but will attend the festivities.
