After giving up two runs in the first inning, Casey Kelly was cruising through the next 3 2/3 innings.
Then he gave up a two-out single to Travis Snider in the fifth inning. After a walk to Eric Thames, Kelly was ahead 0-2 on Shawn Bowman, but then delivered a flat change-up. Bowman smacked it for a three-run homer.
After giving up a one-out walk in the sixth, Kelly was pulled. The runner eventually scored. Kelly's line does not look so good (except for the eight strikeouts): 5 1/3 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 3 BB, 8 K.
Kelly threw 93 pitches, 65 for strikes. He faced 26 batters (19 first-pitch strikes).
Portland trails 6-3.
