Greetings from a sunny Fenway Park.
Adrian Beltre is not in today's Red Sox lineup. Beltre suffered a strained hamstring Sunday, but still played briefly in the All-Star game Tuesday night. Manager Terry Francona said keeping Beltre out was a precautionary move and that Beltre could even pinch-hit tonight. Francona hopes to have him in the lineup Friday.
Beltre underwent a MRI Thursday, which Francona said "the preliminary report was pretty good." Beltre did not seem worried.
"It's not a big tear. Just mild stuff," Beltre said. "Something I can manage."
Boston's lineup: Scutaro SS; Patterson 2B; Ortiz DH; Youkilis 1B; Drew RF; Nava LF; Cameron CF; Hall 3B; Cash C; (Wakefield P).
In Sea Dogs news, Portland announced some roster changes, adding three players from advanced Class A Salem - catcher Ryan Lavarnway, first baseman Jorge Padron and reliever Blake Maxwell.
Maxwell, 25, was with Portland all last year and through spring training, but found himself without a spot on the Sea Dogs roster once the teams broke from Florida. He had a 2.27 ERA with Salem and pitched a few games for Pawtucket.
Padron, 23, is from Cuba and signed as an international free agent with Boston in March. He was batting .270 with one home run in 31 games.
Lavarnway, 22, has been putting up good numbers, batting .289 with 14 home runs.
The Sea Dogs had earlier sent reliever Santo Luis to Pawtucket, and then placed catcher Josue Peley on the inactive list.
Portland also has two major leaguers rehabbing. Reliever Manny Delcarmen is scheduled to pitch tonight in New Britain. If all goes well, he could be back in Boston this weekend ... Outfielder Jeremy Hermida is going to play three games with the Sea Dogs (DH today, LF on Friday and DH Saturday). He will then come back to Boston for evaluation and then play for Pawtucket early next week.
Francona hopes that Hermida will join the Red Sox in Seattle a week from today.
In other rehab news, as previously announced, Clay Buchholz is pitching for Pawtucket on Friday, and Josh Beckett on Saturday. Both could re-join the Red Sox next week.
