In Case You Missed It
John Levesque, 84, takes in the sight of the former Great Northern Paper Co. mill in Millinocket last month. Levesque joined “The Northern” a few years after World War II and retired from the mill in 1987 after 40 years. Now he makes daily visits to the dirt lot across this stretch of the West Branch of the Penobscot River to watch the progress of the mill’s demolition. “It’s a sad sight, isn’t it.?” he asks.

How much farther can Millinocket fall?

In 1900, when men of vision built Great Northern Paper Co. in the shadow of Katahdin, decades of prosperity followed. Then the hard times came – and settled right in – leaving a community in desperate search of a viable future.
