BATH — Bath Iron Works has been awarded a $212 million modification to its contract to build a third DDG-1000 destroyer.
The modification will allow BIW to build the deckhouse, hangar and aft vertical launch system for the Zumwalt-class destroyer.
The modification award was announced Friday by Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, who serves on the Senate Defense Appropriations subcommittee, and Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, who is on the Senate Armed Services Committee.
BIW is currently building three Zumwalt-class destroyers, and the Senate Appropriations Committee this week included an additional $100 million in funding to allow construction of a 10th Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. Collins and King said BIW will build that ship.
